The assessment and proper management of plant genetic resources depends not only on knowing what species adn areas in need of conservation, but also on an appropriate database management systems to manipulate and share knowledge. With this in mind the Forest Planning and Management Project; a UK funded project attached to the Forest Department, initiated the computerization of the main collection held at the Belize National Herbarium in February 1997. The data were mostly entered by Mr. Ramon Vargas whose tie was provided by the Conservation Division of the Belize Forest Department. The database package being used is BGBase, which was developed by Dr, Kerry Walter and Dr. Rob Cubey both currently based at Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh and is used by 73 botanical institutions worldwide. BGBase is a relational database application designed to hold a wide range of biologial, geographical, bibliographical, and people-related data. BGBase is composed of several modules each of which is linked to the others using shared fields and files.
