    Abstract

The sources and mechanisms of accumulation of phosphorus, potassium and calcium and magnesium during tropical forest development in treeless savanna were examined in Neotropical Savanna. The accumulation of nutrients of these is being driven primarily by nutrient sequestering in biomass, and two groups of woody plants were identified as essential to this process: (i) woody savanna dicotyledon which can rapidly increase their population during fire-free-intervals; (ii)larger forest trees whose seedling are capable of establishing themselves in the micro-habitats provided by the savanna trees.
